Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

Academic integrity and writing are deeply interconnected in the field of nursing. Upholding ethical standards in scholarly work fosters a culture of trust and accountability. Academic integrity involves adhering to ethical standards such as honesty, transparency, and accountability in all academic work. In nursing, this is particularly important because the quality of academic writing often reflects the quality of professional practice. For instance, plagiarism in academic writing can lead to a lack of trust in a nurse’s professional credibility (Jamieson & Howard, 2019). Scholarly writing requires nurses to accurately cite sources, paraphrase effectively, and present original ideas, all of which are essential skills for evidence-based practice.

Similarly, professional practices and scholarly ethics are intertwined. Ethical decision-making in clinical settings parallels the rigor required in academic research. Nurses are expected to uphold ethical standards in both their clinical practice and academic work. For example, obtaining informed consent from patients is a fundamental ethical practice that mirrors the need for proper citation and attribution in academic writing (Milton, 2019). Scholarly ethics, such as honesty and transparency, are directly transferable to professional nursing practice, where nurses must document patient care accurately and ethically.

Tools like Grammarly and SafeAssign play a crucial role in maintaining academic integrity. Grammarly helps improve the clarity and correctness of writing, while SafeAssign ensures that work is original and free from plagiarism. Paraphrasing, when done correctly, allows nurses to integrate evidence-based research into their writing without compromising academic integrity.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

To maintain integrity in my academic work as an MSN student, I will use tools like Grammarly and SafeAssign to ensure my writing is clear, concise, and free from plagiarism. I will also consistently cite scholarly sources using APA formatting to give proper credit to the original authors. One effective strategy I employ is reviewing the references of relevant articles to trace foundational research. For example, Schmidt et al. (2019) cite the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, which led me to explore regulatory frameworks. Additionally, I prioritize studies with clear implications for clinical practice, such as Fricke et al.’s (2023) scoping review of evidence-based guidelines.

Module 6 | Part 4: Finalizing the Plan
I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my selected (or currently preferred) specialty and second-preferred specialty. I have also developed a justification of my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined one professional organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and considered how I can become a member of this organization.

Identify each specialty and describe the focus and the role that graduates are prepared for. Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties

My first nursing specialty is Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), and my second preference is Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). The PMHNP role focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with mental health disorders, including mood disorders, anxiety, and substance abuse. PMHNPs work in various settings, such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, and correctional facilities. They often work independently, depending on state regulations, and provide both individual and group therapy.

In contrast, the FNP role focuses on providing primary care to individuals and families across the lifespan. FNPs emphasize preventive care and health promotion, often working in family clinics and underserved communities. While FNPs can work independently in some states, they typically collaborate with physicians to provide comprehensive care.

The key differentiator for me is the focus on mental health in the PMHNP role. I am particularly interested in understanding the causes of mental illness and developing treatment plans that improve patients’ quality of life. This focus aligns with my personal experiences and career goals, making PMHNP the right choice for me.

Step 2: Justification of Nursing Specialty

I have chosen the PMHNP specialization because of my passion for mental health care. My interest in this field was sparked by personal experiences with family members who struggled with mental health issues. I want to help individuals overcome mental health challenges and lead fulfilling lives. The PMHNP role allows me to combine my clinical skills with my desire to make a meaningful impact on patients’ mental well-being.

Step 3: Professional Organizations

The professional organization I have selected is the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). To become a member, I will complete the online membership application, provide proof of my nursing license, and pay the membership fee. Membership in the APNA will provide access to resources, continuing education opportunities, and networking events that will support my professional growth as a PMHNP.

Architect Daniel Libeskind is credited with saying “To provide meaningful architecture is not to parody history, but to articulate it.” The suggestion is that his work does not copy the efforts of others but relies on it.

Understanding the work of others is critically important to new work. Contributions to the nursing body of knowledge can happen when you are able to analyze and articulate the efforts of previous research. Research analysis skills are therefore critical tools for your toolbox.

In this Assignment, you will locate relevant existing research. You also will analyze this research using a tool helpful for analysis.

To Prepare:

Reflect on the strategies presented in the Resources this Module’s Learning Resources in support of locating and analyzing research.
Use the Walden Library to identify and read one peer-reviewed research article focused on a topic in your specialty field that interests you.
Review the article you selected and reflect on the professional practice use of theories/concepts described by the article.
