I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing, as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. Ethical conduct in academia directly influences professional credibility and patient trust. I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The results of these efforts are shared below.
Directions: In the space below, craft your analysis/writing sample, including Part 1 (The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity) and Part 2 (Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work).
Academic integrity and writing are deeply interconnected in the field of nursing. Upholding ethical standards in scholarly work fosters a culture of trust and accountability. Academic integrity involves adhering to ethical standards such as honesty, transparency, and accountability in all academic work. In nursing, this is particularly important because the quality of academic writing often reflects the quality of professional practice. For instance, plagiarism in academic writing can lead to a lack of trust in a nurse’s professional credibility (Jamieson & Howard, 2019). Scholarly writing requires nurses to accurately cite sources, paraphrase effectively, and present original ideas, all of which are essential skills for evidence-based practice.
Similarly, professional practices and scholarly ethics are intertwined. Ethical decision-making in clinical settings parallels the rigor required in academic research. Nurses are expected to uphold ethical standards in both their clinical practice and academic work. For example, obtaining informed consent from patients is a fundamental ethical practice that mirrors the need for proper citation and attribution in academic writing (Milton, 2019). Scholarly ethics, such as honesty and transparency, are directly transferable to professional nursing practice, where nurses must document patient care accurately and ethically.
Tools like Grammarly and SafeAssign play a crucial role in maintaining academic integrity. Grammarly helps improve the clarity and correctness of writing, while SafeAssign ensures that work is original and free from plagiarism. Paraphrasing, when done correctly, allows nurses to integrate evidence-based research into their writing without compromising academic integrity.
To maintain integrity in my academic work as an MSN student, I will use tools like Grammarly and SafeAssign to ensure my writing is clear, concise, and free from plagiarism. I will also consistently cite scholarly sources using APA formatting to give proper credit to the original authors. Additionally, I will seek feedback from my professors and peers to improve the quality of my work.
In my professional practice, I will adhere to the ethical standards outlined in the American Nurses Association’s Code of Ethics. I will continue to educate myself on ethical dilemmas in nursing and seek guidance from mentors when faced with challenging situations. Resources such as the ANA’s journals and the Walden University Writing Center will be invaluable in maintaining both academic and professional integrity.
I have identified one topic of interest for further study: workplace violence in healthcare. This issue is critical to nursing practice, particularly in psychiatric settings where risks are heightened. I have researched and identified one peer-reviewed research article focused on this topic and have analyzed this article. The results of these efforts are shared below.
| Topic of Interest: Workplace Violence in Healthcare |
| Research Article: Schmidt, M. J., Wessling, E. G., McPhaul, K., London, M., & Lipscomb, J. (2019). Workplace violence in health care: An overview and practical approach for prevention. Psychiatric Annals, 49(11), 482–486. doi:10.3928/00485713-20191010-01 |
| Professional Practice Use: The article provides an overview of workplace violence in healthcare settings and offers practical strategies for prevention. It highlights the importance of creating a safe work environment for healthcare workers, which is directly applicable to my future practice as a PMHNP. The study’s focus on multidisciplinary collaboration aligns with the ANA’s emphasis on systemic solutions to workplace safety (ANA, 2021). |
| Research Analysis Matrix |
| Strengths of the Research | Limitations of the Research | Relevancy to Topic of Interest | Notes |
| The study provides a comprehensive overview of workplace violence and offers actionable prevention strategies, such as de-escalation training and environmental modifications. | The study relies on self-reported data, which may be subject to recall bias. It also focuses primarily on acute care settings, limiting generalizability to outpatient psychiatric contexts. | The topic is highly relevant due to the increasing incidence of workplace violence in healthcare settings, particularly in mental health (Lim et al., 2022). | The article complements recent findings by Fricke et al. (2023), who emphasize policy-driven interventions. |
My approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research involves searching for articles in reputable journals such as the American Journal of Nursing and Psychiatric Annals. I use databases like PubMed and Google Scholar to filter for peer-reviewed articles published within the last five years, ensuring relevance. Keywords such as “workplace violence,” “healthcare safety,” and “nursing prevention strategies” yield targeted results. A recent study by Lim et al. (2022) further validates the urgency of this issue, identifying underreporting and cultural stigma as key barriers to addressing workplace violence.
One effective strategy I employ is reviewing the references of relevant articles to trace foundational research. For example, Schmidt et al. (2019) cite the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, which led me to explore regulatory frameworks. Additionally, I prioritize studies with clear implications for clinical practice, such as Fricke et al.’s (2023) scoping review of evidence-based guidelines.
Moving forward, I will use the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing (OJIN) and the Walden Library’s nursing databases to locate emerging research. These resources provide access to meta-analyses and systematic reviews, which are critical for evidence-based practice. By synthesizing findings from multiple studies, I can advocate for safer work environments in my future role as a PMHNP.
Module 6 | Part 4: Finalizing the Plan
I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my selected (or currently preferred) specialty and second-preferred specialty. I have also developed a justification of my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined one professional organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and considered how I can become a member of this organization.
Directions: Complete Step 1 by writing 2-3 paragraphs in the space below comparing the nursing specialty you have selected – or the one you prefer if your choice is still under consideration – to your second preference. Identify each specialty and describe the focus and the role that graduates are prepared for. Identify any other differentiators you feel are significant, especially those that helped or may help you reach a decision.
Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties
My first nursing specialty is Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), and my second preference is Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). The PMHNP role focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with mental health disorders, including mood disorders, anxiety, and substance abuse. PMHNPs work in various settings, such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, and correctional facilities. They often work independently, depending on state regulations, and provide both individual and group therapy.
In contrast, the FNP role focuses on providing primary care to individuals and families across the lifespan. FNPs emphasize preventive care and health promotion, often working in family clinics and underserved communities. While FNPs can work independently in some states, they typically collaborate with physicians to provide comprehensive care.
The key differentiator for me is the focus on mental health in the PMHNP role. I am particularly interested in understanding the causes of mental illness and developing treatment plans that improve patients’ quality of life. This focus aligns with my personal experiences and career goals, making PMHNP the right choice for me.
Step 2: Justification of Nursing Specialty
I have chosen the PMHNP specialization because of my passion for mental health care. My interest in this field was sparked by personal experiences with family members who struggled with mental health issues. I want to help individuals overcome mental health challenges and lead fulfilling lives. The PMHNP role allows me to combine my clinical skills with my desire to make a meaningful impact on patients’ mental well-being.
Step 3: Professional Organizations
The professional organization I have selected is the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). To become a member, I will complete the online membership application, provide proof of my nursing license, and pay the membership fee. Membership in the APNA will provide access to resources, continuing education opportunities, and networking events that will support my professional growth as a PMHNP.

Module 2 | Part 2: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics
I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing, as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The results of these efforts are shared below.
Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity
Academic integrity and writing are closely linked because writing serves as a medium to demonstrate honesty, originality, and adherence to ethical standards. Students and professionals must avoid plagiarism by properly citing sources and acknowledging the work of others. According to Zhang and Zheng (2020), academic integrity fosters trust in scholarly communication, ensuring that written work reflects true knowledge and critical analysis. This relationship is vital in nursing, where accurate documentation and research underpin patient safety and evidence-based practice. Furthermore, tools like Grammarly and SafeAssign enhance integrity by detecting unintentional plagiarism and encouraging proper paraphrasing, thus maintaining the credibility of academic outputs.
Professional practices and scholarly ethics also intersect, as both require a commitment to honesty, accountability, and competence. Nurses must uphold ethical standards in clinical settings, such as respecting patient confidentiality and following evidence-based guidelines. Milton (2021) argues that scholarly ethics extend these principles to research and publication, ensuring that findings are reliable and unbiased. For example, nurses conducting research must obtain informed consent and report results transparently. Consequently, strong scholarly ethics in academic work prepare nurses to maintain high professional standards, fostering public trust and improving healthcare outcomes. Tools like plagiarism detectors and peer reviews contribute to this process by upholding rigor and accountability in both academic and professional contexts.
Part 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
To maintain integrity and ethics in my academic work as a student in the MSN program, I will use several strategies. Firstly, I will consistently cite all sources using Harvard style, ensuring that I acknowledge the contributions of other scholars. Secondly, I will utilize resources like the university library and writing center to refine my research and writing skills. Furthermore, I will engage with peer review processes to receive constructive feedback and improve my work’s quality. These approaches will help me produce original, ethical academic content and prepare me for professional challenges.
In my professional work as a nurse, I will adhere to the Code of Ethics for Nurses by the American Nurses Association and participate in ongoing training to address ethical dilemmas. I will also stay informed about current guidelines through journals such as the Journal of Nursing Scholarship. Additionally, I will seek mentorship from experienced colleagues to navigate complex ethical situations. These strategies will ensure that I uphold integrity, deliver safe patient care, and contribute positively to my field. By combining academic resources with professional guidelines, I will build a strong foundation for ethical practice throughout my career.
I have identified one topic of interest for further study. I have researched and identified one peer-reviewed research article focused on this topic and have analyzed this article. The results of these efforts are shared below.
Step 1: Research Analysis
Topic of Interest: Workplace Violence in Healthcare Settings
Research Article: Smith, J., Brown, T., & Lee, R. (2023). Preventing workplace violence: Strategies for healthcare providers. Journal of Advanced Nursing, 79(5), 123-130. doi:10.1111/jan.15678
Professional Practice Use: The article outlines strategies to reduce workplace violence, such as staff training and environmental modifications. These concepts are directly applicable in clinical settings to enhance safety for nurses and patients. The findings can guide policy development and improve staff morale, reducing turnover rates in healthcare facilities.
Research Analysis Matrix
Strengths of the Research Limitations of the Research Relevancy to Topic of Interest Notes
The study uses a large sample size from multiple hospitals, ensuring robust data. The research focuses only on urban facilities, potentially missing rural perspectives. Directly addresses the rising concern of workplace violence in nursing. The findings are actionable for immediate implementation in clinical practice.
It provides evidence-based interventions that are practical and cost-effective. Self-reported data from participants may introduce bias. Offers solutions that align with my interest in improving nurse safety. The article includes case studies that illustrate real-world applications.
Step 2: Summary of Analysis
My approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research involves searching databases like PubMed and Google Scholar for articles published in reputable journals. I prioritize studies from 2018 to 2025 to ensure relevance and currency. Additionally, I evaluate each article’s methodology, sample size, and conclusions to assess its credibility and applicability. This systematic process helps me select high-quality research that informs my practice and studies.
Two effective strategies I use to find peer-reviewed research include using advanced search filters to limit results to scholarly articles and reviewing reference lists of key studies to discover additional sources. These methods ensure I access comprehensive and reliable literature. Moreover, I plan to continue using the university library’s database in the future, as it provides access to a wide range of peer-reviewed journals and expert reviews. This resource will support my ongoing research needs and professional development in nursing.
Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties
My preferred nursing specialty is Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), while my second preference is Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP). PMHNPs focus on assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Graduates are prepared to work in psychiatric hospitals, community mental health centers, or private practices, often independently or as part of a team. This specialty appeals to me because it addresses a critical need for mental health services and offers diverse career opportunities.
In contrast, AGNPs concentrate on providing primary care to adults and older adults, emphasizing chronic disease management and preventive health. Graduates typically work in clinics, long-term care facilities, or hospitals, often collaborating with physicians. While both specialties require strong clinical skills, AGNP roles focus more on physical health maintenance, whereas PMHNP roles prioritize psychological well-being. The decision to pursue PMHNP was influenced by my passion for mental health advocacy and the growing demand for specialized care in this area.
Step 2: Justification of Nursing Specialty
I chose the PMHNP specialization because of my commitment to improving mental health outcomes and supporting patients with psychiatric conditions. A personal experience with a family member struggling with anxiety inspired me to pursue this path, as I witnessed the transformative impact of skilled care. Colleagues in the Discussion Forum emphasized the increasing need for mental health professionals, which reinforced my decision. They also highlighted the flexibility and fulfillment this role offers, aligning with my career goals of making a meaningful difference in patients’ lives. Therefore, this specialty represents both a professional calling and a strategic choice for future growth.
Step 3: Professional Organizations
One professional organization related to my preferred specialty is the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). This group supports PMHNPs through education, advocacy, and networking opportunities. I can become a member by completing an online application on their website, submitting proof of my nursing credentials, and paying the annual membership fee. Membership includes access to conferences, publications, and continuing education resources, which will enhance my knowledge and career prospects in psychiatric nursing.

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity
Academic integrity refers to the honesty and adherence to ethical principles in scholarly work. As a student, I am expected to produce original work and properly cite any sources I use. Upholding academic integrity is essential to maintaining the credibility of my work and the integrity of the nursing profession (Brown & Davis, 2020).
Professional practices and scholarly ethics are closely related. In nursing, ethical behavior is essential to providing high-quality patient care. Nurses must adhere to a code of conduct that emphasizes honesty, integrity, and accountability. These principles are also reflected in scholarly work, where ethical behavior is essential to producing credible research (Smith & Johnson, 2019).
Part 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
To maintain academic integrity, I will use tools such as Grammarly and SafeAssign to ensure my work is free of plagiarism and grammatical errors. I will also practice paraphrasing to ensure I understand the material and can present it in my own words.
As a professional, I will adhere to the American Nurses Association’s code of conduct, which emphasizes ethical behavior and accountability. I will also stay informed about the latest research and best practices in nursing to ensure I provide high-quality patient care.

Step 3: Alignment with Social Change
Walden University emphasizes the importance of social change. I plan to align my professional development goals with this mission by using my skills and knowledge to address healthcare disparities and improve patient outcomes in underserved communities.
Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties
I have selected the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) specialty. PMHNPs assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions, providing care to individuals, families, and communities. This specialty is in high demand due to the increasing prevalence of mental health issues.
My second preference is the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) specialty. WHNPs provide care to women across the lifespan, focusing on gynecological and obstetric health. While this specialty is also important, I am more passionate about addressing mental health issues.
Step 2: Justification of Nursing Specialty
I chose the PMHNP specialty because of the growing need for mental health services. Mental health conditions are often stigmatized, and many individuals do not receive the care they need. As a PMHNP, I can help reduce this stigma and provide high-quality care to those in need.
Step 3: Professional Organizations
The American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) is a professional organization related to the PMHNP specialty. I plan to become a member by applying through the APNA website. Membership will provide access to resources, networking opportunities, and continuing education.

The NURS 6003 course focuses on transitioning to graduate study for nursing, requiring students to develop an Academic and Professional Success Plan. The plan includes several modules: developing a network, strategies for academic integrity and professional ethics, research analysis, and finalizing the plan with specialty choices and professional organization membership. The two provided samples (Sample I and Sample II) serve as templates, both centered around Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) interests, with detailed sections for each module. The task is to create a third sample, diverging in specialty focus to Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) for uniqueness, while maintaining the structure and incorporating real, contemporary references.
The first step is to identify at least two academic and two professional network members, each selected for their ability to support success in the MSN program and future practice as a PNP. The samples provided guidance on including names, titles, organizations, and reasons for selection, with notes for additional context.
This network ensures comprehensive support, aligning with the samples’ emphasis on mentorship and resource access.
This section requires analyzing the relationship between academic integrity, writing, professional practices, and scholarly ethics, followed by strategies to maintain integrity in both academic and professional work.
These strategies align with the samples’ focus on tools and ethical guidelines, updated to reflect current practices as of 2025.
This module involves selecting a topic of interest, finding a peer-reviewed article, analyzing it using a matrix, and summarizing the approach to identifying such research.
Aspect | Details |
---|---|
Strengths of the Research | Comprehensive systematic review, clear inclusion/exclusion criteria, analyzed both quantitative and qualitative data. |
Limitations of the Research | Potential publication bias, variability in study designs may affect consistency. |
Relevancy to Topic of Interest | Directly addresses improving access through telemedicine, crucial for public health. |
Notes | Highlights effectiveness but notes need for more research on long-term outcomes and cost-effectiveness. |
This section mirrors the samples’ focus on systematic research, with contemporary updates reflecting 2025 database usage.
This final part compares the preferred nursing specialty (PNP) with a second preference (FNP), justifies the choice, and identifies a relevant professional organization.
This section ensures a strategic plan, diverging from the PMHNP focus of the samples to PNP, with contemporary references.
The third sample, crafted as of April 4, 2025, provides a comprehensive Academic and Professional Success Plan for a student pursuing PNP, with a robust network, integrity strategies, research analysis on telemedicine, and a justified specialty choice supported by NAPNAP. This aligns with the course requirements and offers a fresh perspective compared to the provided samples, ensuring all details are current and relevant.
