Dear Sara McNeal
I found your point of view very compelling and informative in the article Health Official says still to Early to Reopen Clark County Schools. The course of action taken by the health and county officials is commendable as it considers the severity of the situation. The relatively low positivity rate must be protected to prevent a super-spreader case, and opening schools will compromise the majority of the population. Opening school at this time is very dangerous not only for the children but also their parents.
It also serves as a potential factor that will increase the positivity rate and increase infections will effectively result in higher hospitalization rates, further stressing the county. There is a variety of reasons why schools should not be open. Still, the most essential reason is that increased infection may place an undue burden on county health infrastructure and individual people. Children staying at home continue to be costly for parents when the majority of people have financial stresses that impact their economic well being. This is understandable but necessary because the alternative picture is potentially worse.
Nonetheless, opening virtual schools is a good idea since it will provide an avenue for more students to continue learning at their homes’ safety. There might be some controversy over the ease of access for all learning resources by the student, and this is where I believe the county education officials should place most of their emphasis. The majority of school goers in this generation already have a greater familiarity with using portable computer devices. There are a variety of cheaper options that may be present for parents to acquire and use.
