Write a piece of creative nonfiction. Use the examples we’re
read. Look through Anderson and find other pieces that attract your
attention. Go to creativenonfiction.org and poke around the online
readings (https://www.creativenonfiction.org/list/type/onlinereading).
Before you submit: freewrite, think, journal, plan, write, make
mistakes, fix mistakes, develop, think, revise. The path you take is as
important as the product – the finished piece.
Considerations
Pay careful attention to the topics people write about.
Consider the discussions of form and style and genre in Anderson and the
course modules. Think about the sorts of stories you tell other people
about yourself. Mull over the stories you don’t tell people about
yourself.
IMPORTANT! Anything is a potential subject for a story. You may be tempted to think: nothing important has happened to me. Or: only the painful stuff is worth writing about.
Neither are true. Great emotions and conflict are often the subject of
writing, but they are not what creative nonfiction is about. Nonfiction
is about real things. Ideas might be filtered through memory of
imagination, but the kernel of truth is there. (And yes, the kernel of
truth must also be in fiction, but that’s another discussion or another
time.) As a reader and a teacher, I am just as happy with a silly piece
as I am with dramatic work.
Our memories and experiences are the well we draw from to find a
subject. Some people are comfortable telling intimate details of
themselves; others are not. It can be therapeutic to write about
something difficult, and it can also be disastrous. Remember that you
are putting this out into the world, and your instructor and classmates
will read what you write.
Audience
Consider your imagined reader – it might be the instructor or
another student class or your best friend or a stranger. Your audience
affects what and how you write. If you have a reader in mind, it can
help you shape your ideas.
Genre
Notice that the task is not to “write a nonfiction story.”
Creative nonfiction exists in a multitude of genres – story and essay
are common, but there are no real limits or defining forms. What matters
is the kernel of truth, the revelation of truth – not the genre.
