Tutorial – Identifying and using your signature strengths

Purpose:              This activity is designed for you to identify and understand your own signature strengths and to engage in perspective taking by adopting the voice of various strengths in response to several scenarios.

The Values in Action (VIA) survey conceptualizes strengths asmorally valued components of character that contribute to a fulfilling life (Peterson & Seligman,2004); the relative potency of 24 strengths is measured by using a free online survey called the Valuesin Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS; Seligman, Park, & Peterson, 2004), or simply the VIASurvey. The VIA Survey measures character strengths, and the authors of the instrument encourage a focus on the top fiveresults provided, which they classify as “signature strengths”.Signature strengths often represent the “lens” through which people view the world. This lens influencesthe things people value or find important in a situation, the kinds of questions they tend to ask, the information theyfocus on, and the emotions they experience, all of which can shape their behavior. Understanding your own and others’ corestrengthscan provide some insight into how they view a situation and why they might respond to it asthey do.

Which Citation Styles Can You Handle?

We get a lot of “Can you do MLA or APA?”—and yes, we can! Our writers ace every style—APA, MLA, Turabian, you name it. Tell us your preference, and we’ll format it flawlessly.

This exercise is designed to not only provide insight into your own signature strengths but also enhance your ability to use a strengths approach to engage in perspective taking. It prompts reflection onhow others’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors may be connected to the tendencies represented in theirpersonal strengths assessment results and facilitates the process of reframing situations fromalternative viewpoints.

Step 5:  This is an optional after class task you can complete to reinforce the use of a strengths approach in perspective taking. Note, for your reflective journal entry you can either use the above class discussion or this personal writing exercise.

Write about a specific situation in your life in which you and someone youknow well (a roommate, coworker, parent, friend, or significant other) approached a situation withdifferent priorities or from two seemingly distinct perspectives. Describe the scenario in enoughdetail to give the reader a solid overview of how both you and the other person reacted to thesituation.

Can You Use Any Citation Format?

Yep—APA, Chicago, Harvard, MLA, Turabian, you name it! Our writers customize every detail to fit your assignment’s needs, ensuring it meets academic standards down to the last footnote or bibliography entry. They’re pros at making your paper look sharp and compliant, no matter the style guide.

Then, indicate which of your signature strengths or themes influenced how you approachedthe situation, describing how your thoughts, statements, or behaviors might have been shaped by thoseparticular strengths/themes. Next, consider which strengths/themes might have informed the otherperson’s response. Even if you do not know the other person’s signature profile, try to reframe thesituation to view it from his or her perspective.

Your goal is to construct a logical argument thatexplains the other person’s response, and doing so may require that you guess which strengths/themesare dominant for that person on the basis of the opinions or priorities he or she expressed to you.

Can I Change My Order Details?

Finally, reflect on the impact this exercise had on your understanding of the situation. Describe howusing a strengths approach to reframe a situation might help you when you encounter people whoseperspectives differ from your own
