1:
I was
not aware that this stats course was online, until after we had our first class
meeting in Gresh. After hearing it was an online course I called my sister in a
panic because I had never taken an online class before and had heard stats was
hard. Yet, I can happily say that although this course took a lot of time and
some sections were difficult, I would chose to take this course again. It has
made me unafraid of online courses. Dr. W has many great points in his video
"Where Learning Takes Place." First and foremost, I relate to when he
said students like the instant feedback. I am a perfectionist and love knowing
I got a question right and being able to know my quiz and test scores
immediately. Even when I do not get a question right, I like knowing I am not
doing it right, therefore I do not work out all of the problems the wrong way
and have to redo them. I also like all of the online resources the book gives
you to use. I have used the examples and practice quizzes in almost all of the
chapters we have gone over. The examples are honestly one of my favorite things
about the online class, other than the instant feedback. The reason it is one
of my favorite things is because it normally helps me out so that I do not have
to ask Dr. W. The practice quizzes are a great way to study for an upcoming
test and I have used them before both of the previous tests and plan on using
them for this next test. I did not disagree with any of what Dr. W had to say,
he honestly hit all of the points on the head and I can relate to all of them!

With
the expansion of technology, education has been gradually shifting towards
easier- hands on method of learning. Combining the Internet with student
focused software, online textbooks, and materials, it allows for students to
take their own pace. As there are infinite resources that are provided to help
students, learning how to understand a topic or section is much easier and
simpler to reinforce for the future. I was unaware of the manner that my hybrid
class would proceed as it was first time which I would be experiencing it. At
first I found myself caught off guard, but throughout this semester I realized
how this form of a hybrid-online class was rewarding and was even beginning to
change how I viewed my classroom learning.
Through
the online textbook and the ability to take notes and highlight key ideas, to
the videos provided as a review, I found myself taking a personal pace. It was
always a relief to know that if I didn’t understand how the textbook explained
the materials, then I could go to review videos. I also tried to use outside
resources, such as YouTube to look up refreshers and to find example problems.
As I relied on Statcrunch as well my TI84/85 calculator, I needed some
additional tutorials. There were numerous videos that I found which clearly
outlined the steps, and also gave a short reasoning for each method. Through
the online forums, I could also read about how other students were learning the
material in their own manners, and that was encouraging that I had found my own
method of learning.

Dr.
W’s videos, which are provided on the Oncourse page, were also a great insight
into the shift that can be seen with classes moving from the traditional
classroom setting. From the comfort of a computer with the disposal of all the
resources imaginable, it allows for knowledge to be immeasurable. Even while
having a schedule that is difficult, online classes made it a way to plan ahead
and schedule ahead of each assignment. The opportunities to meet with the
graduate assistants are always a great chance to get clarifications and
guidance on any materials that can be confusing as well. Having this form of a
class setting is flexible to the student’s needs, while allowing enough time to
explore statistics. It will intrigue other students to find their best study
habits, while making the experience of learning broader and focused on
developing the skills that are asked to truly pass the class successfully.

As an online learner, I resonated with a lot of what Dr. Wakhungu said.
The immediate feedback and the engagement that come with doing online
coursework are critical to the learning process, and these two things are much
harder to come by in a traditional classroom setting. I felt that being in an
online class has optimized my learning; if this class was taught in the
traditional manner I would have to have spent 2-4 times as much time learning
the material as I do now. Coming into the class I wasn’t quite sure if I would
like the online set up, as I value the class time I have in other classes, but
mostly just because I didn’t know if I could learn well online. I can say now
that all of those fears were quelled, and I found the set-up of this course
very conducive to learning. I had the option of having face to face time if I
wanted it, but I found that the method of reviewing lecture slides, doing
practice questions, and doing the homework and quizzes to be enough for me to
thoroughly learn the material. I would encourage other professors to try to
incorporate some of these attributes into their classroom styles. Like Dr. W
suggested, a hybrid class setting could be a good way to test the waters in this
regard. Also, like Dr. W. stated as well, online learning tools are becoming
more useful, effective, and common as the availability of technology increases,
and I believe embracing these tools can and will be very beneficial to the
learner and the teacher.
