Symbolic Meanings The purpose of this paper is to have you explore the world of symbolic meanings in Mesoamerica within the topic that you chose at the beginning of the semester. As per www.dictionary.com (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., a symbol can be described as: a word, phrase, image, or the like having a complex of associated meanings and perceived as having inherent value separable from that which is symbolized, as being part of that which is symbolized, and as performing its normal function of standing for or representing that which is symbolized: usually conceived as deriving its meaning chiefly from the structure in which it appears. also something that represents or suggests something else. Symbols often take the form of words, visual images, or gestures that are used to convey ideas and beliefs. All human cultures use symbols to express the underlying structure of their social systems, to represent ideal cultural characteristics, such as beauty, and to ensure that the culture is passed on to new generations. Symbolic relationships are learned rather than biologically or naturally determined, and each culture has its own symbols. First, give us some background on your cultural institution and then provide a brief desсrіption of an important symbol related to the cultural institution you have chosen to study. This could be a word (in the indigenous language), person, deity, image, object (artifact), text, or practice which is deemed sacred to the Maya people, or seems to have great visibility or aroused great enthusiasm, allegiance, fear, love, horror, etc. Second, explain what this symbol represents, what it is a symbol of? Do any characteristics of the symbol make it particularly suitable for expressing its meaning? Third, describe the context in which this symbol appears. How was the symbol displayed within the culture? Is it part of a wider field of symbols arranged into meaningful ″sentences″ or does it stand alone? What is being ″said″? Is it part of a whole set of stimuli capable of arousing emotion? If so, what emotions are evoked and what statements do these emotions make regarding the culture’s assumptions, rules, and values? Finally, how do you feel about this message? Does the symbolic meaning seem more or less reasonable, beneficial, or beautiful? Is the symbolic meaning expressed something that you can appreciate or relate to? Is there a similar symbolic meaning in our own society? Instructions: Write a 3-4 page research paper about your symbol discussing the above questions. Like your first research assignment, I will ask you to use at least three outside sources in your presentations, although you are also encouraged to use resources from class. Of course, be very careful to use valid sources, as this will affect your grade.
