The company I currently work for is Verizon and the
service we provide is FIOS which is a cable, internet and phone service. The
supply chain for providing FIOS to customers is as follows the manufacturing
and delivering of fiber optic cables from suppliers, the placing of the cables
in manholes and street pole by workers who then connect the cables with
materials taken from the storage warehouse. The processing of orders by
customer service for customers who request the service and then the
installation of the service by technicians.
The upstream members of the supply chain would be
considered the cable manufacturers and the placement of the materials for
future use because these are the raw material providers (Russell, Taylor,
2014). The downstream members of the supply chain would be considered customer
service department and installation technicians because this is where the
distribution to the customers really takes place.
A single current issue that may negatively impact a
company’s global supply chain is the source of their raw materials which they
need to create a product or service for a customer. An example of this is
Chipotle the Mexican grill company that uses “fresh locally sourced produce
“for their foods (Stewart, 2016). This means that they are subject to whatever
rules or regulations apply in each region they are getting their produce or raw
materials from and some global locations may not uphold the same standards as
others. By creating this type of supply chain Chipotle has left themselves
vulnerable to things like their food being responsible for infecting people with
E coli. This is an example of a global supply chain not utilizing one universal
supplier that upholds standards that the supplied organization approves.
