Argument of Definition

For this assignment, you will select a single key term associated with your Public Discourse Issue and formulate a specific claim about its definition. You might propose a new definition, challenge a current definition, or provide a new definition that fills a gap in the discourse surrounding your issue. You will need to move beyond the formal, “dictionary” definition here, though it may prove useful to consider how the formal definition differs from the way your term gets used by communities invested in your PDI.

Assignment Details

Identify a single term or phrase (i.e. “sexual harassment,” “illegal immigrant,” “protest”) that you will analyze throughout the essay.
Explain what is controversial about the term: how is it currently being used in relationship to your PDI? Are there debates regarding what or who falls under the category defined by your term? Are there disagreements about what constitutes or “counts as” your term?
Provide a concrete claim that makes an argument about how your term is or should be defined, redefined, or included in relationship to your PDI.

Incorporate a maximum of two outside sources that lend insight into how your term is being used in relationship to your PDI, or to show how communities invested in your PDI might use the term differently than other groups.
Other Requirements

Your paper should be a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 4 pages long. Use double-spaced Times New Roman 12-point font with one-inch margins.
Properly document your outside sources, both in-text and in a Works Cited page, using 2016 MLA format. You may not use more than 2 sources.

Confine your analysis to the term you’ve selected.
Provide full and thorough analysis of the quotations from the outside sources you select.
Remember that while you may want to discuss the formal definition of a term, you must also go beyond the formal definition to determine how your term gets used in the context of your PDI.
