In my history class, we individually read “Oedipus The King”. In this play, Oedipus was the king of Thebes and who was very determined to remove the plague over the city. So, he made it his priority to find the murderer of the king before him, Laius, to end the plague that would destroy the city. In Oedipus’s City, their society was basically like a monarchy. They also had prophets who told them their fate and destiny.

Oedipus also committed incest and murder in the play which he didn’t learn until the end. In the beginning, Oedipus had to come up with a solution to the city’s problem, to remove the plague. The king is the only one in charge. He makes the rules and decisions. Today, we have a person that looks like the person in charge but, not really. Today, you may call someone like that the president.

Many people in my society want that power to be the only ruler or person in charge. Some even kill or play dirty just for power. Today, the president is something like the king. The difference is the president is told what to do by people higher than him such as, the Senate and House of Representatives. Oedipus wanted the citizens only to see him as the only solution to your problems. Oedipus had all the responsibility for him, his citizens, and city. The citizens of Thebes came running to the king for an answer to stop the plague.

“Oh Oedipus, king of the land, our greatest power! You see us before you now, men of all ages, clinging to your altars. (Pg#2)” Another similarity to today’s society and Oedipus is men are looked at to be the primary person in charge. They are looked at this most dominant sex. You rarely see women in charge back then or now. It’s almost unlikely for a woman in power. In the search of the murderer, a blind prophet was called to him and told Oedipus that he was the murderer of the previous king. The prophet even tried to tell the king that he was a part of a nasty marriage, and a foreseen blindness.

“Since you have Little did he know the prophet was right. In the play, there are certain individuals who already know what you did and what you going to do before you. Compared to today, the only person or people that knows that information is yourself and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In our society, we have the same. There are fortunate tellers and palm readers who can tell you stuff about your life.
