Your persuasive essay will be based on this article from the New York Times. You will write a three-paragraph essay (250 words minimum) in response to the article you selected and the debate it presents. You wrote a three-paragraph essay last week on China′s Cram Schools. You will follow the same essay format. However, I will give you a review below. You do not need to label your sentences. Follow this Essay Format Introduction (3 sentences): 1. (Thesis) Your first sentence must state your position on the topic, whether you agree/disagree. Do not waste time talking about what each side thinks. 2-3. Two sentences discussing your topic in general. Body Paragraph (8 sentences) 1. A topic sentence that gives your strongest reason for or against your topic with an opinion. 2. A specific example with a quote from one of the articles with quotation marks around it to support ideas. Use your own words right before the quote with a comma: According to John Smith the school district believes, ″All students should buy their own supplies.″ 3. Your Explanation of the quote-elaborate on the importance of its ideas (most important part of this paragraph) 4. Your Explanation of the quote-elaborate on the importance of its ideas (most important part of this paragraph) 5. A specific example with a quote from one of the articles with quotation marks around it to support ideas. It is actually better than the original topic sentence because you proved your position. Conclusion (3 sentences) 1. Restated Thesis-(should be better than the original thesis since you have said so much.) 2-3 Comment on the outcomes of your resolutions. Give a firm statement that shows that people would be so much better off because of your position on the topic.
