Andre Dubus’s “Killings” is a story about how one guy, Richard Strout, is jealous of Frank Fowler because his wife left him and is now seeing Frank. It’s also about two killings that happen with different motives. One of the character’s, Richard Strout kills because of jealousy, whereas the other, Matt Fowler kills because of the love he had for his son. Long story short Richard Strout took the life of an innocent man, he then was murdered in return.

Richard Strout was just a guy trying to get reunited with his family but was unable to because some new guy is now with his wife, Mary Ann, and his two boys. Richard has told Frank, the new guy, that he needs to stay away from his family time and time again, but that doesn’t stop Frank from seeing Mary Ann. “One night he beat Frank”(par 33).

When reading that sentence you know that Richard had seen him with Mary Ann and got mad so Richard told Frank to back off and Frank didn’t listen, Richard then beat him up. Then Richard had seen them again in his house and wasn’t happy about that. “Richard strout shot Frank in front of the boys. This just shows you right here that he didn’t plan on killing Frank, it just happened out of jealousy that he had towards Frank for having what he wanted to have with his family. The police then got him and took him to jail then was apprehended, but he managed to pay bail and get out of prison. Which made Matt think that the justice system was not fit for deciding what was right for Richard because he is now out shopping like a normal citizen because he got away with killing Frank.Then we have Matt Fowler. Matt is a wonderful father and husband.

He had three children, until his youngest son Frank was murdered by Richard. Matt had a very strong relationship with his children, especially with Frank. Matt has a very strong heart and is a very caring person. “He had always been a fearful father: when his children were young, at the start of the summer he thought of them drowning in a pond or the sea, and he was relieved when he would come home in the evenings and they were there”(par.77) After thinking about that little memory that he had, it just doesn’t seem like Matt has the qualities of a killer. When Frank died his family was never the same. It could be because Frank was the only one still living in the house with his parents, the other two children lived away.

The other children weren’t really talked about in the story, but that doesn’t mean that he might not have a strong bond with them, it just probably wasn’t as strong as Frank’s and Matt’s. Matt’s bond with Frank really showed us what kind of person he was. But that doesn’t always mean that they are the kind hearted people they seem to be. When Matt had the plan of killing Richard he had thought of everything that he was wanting to do to him. He made it look like he was running away from everything. So Matt made him pack a suitcase and clear out some of his stuff to make it seem as if he is fleeing the country.when Matt tells Richard to drive into the woods and someone will come pick him up to take him to the airport Richard then tries to run away, knowing that it is all a ploy, Matt shoots him first in the back and then in the head.
