One of the four main categories in the NCLEX-RN\u00ae examination blueprint is health promotion and maintenance. Health promotion aims to empower individuals and communities to increase control over the determinants of health and thereby improve health (World Health Organization, 2022). There is a clear relationship between this category and the concept of health promotion, as health promotion and disease prevention are key aspects of maintaining overall health and wellness.<br \/>\nImportance<\/p>\n<p>Health promotion and disease prevention are extremely important aspects of professional nursing practice. When health promotion strategies are not adequately addressed, there can be negative impacts on both individual patients and the overall health of communities. Some potential negative effects of failing to address health promotion include increased risk of chronic disease, higher healthcare costs, and preventable morbidity and mortality (Healthy People 2030, 2023). For example, if smoking cessation counseling is not provided, patients are more likely to continue smoking and be at higher risk for lung cancer, heart disease, and other tobacco-related illnesses. Additionally, if communities do not have access to health education and preventive screenings, health issues may be identified at later, less treatable stages.<br \/>\nHealthcare Disparities, Inequalities, and Interventions<br \/>\nCertain populations experience greater health disparities and are at higher risk if health promotion strategies are not prioritized. For example, individuals living in rural areas or with low socioeconomic status often have less access to preventive healthcare and resources supporting healthy behaviors (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2022).
