In her book, Rosenthal (2018) puts focus on the high cost of healthcare and highlights all the main drivers of high healthcare costs encompassing insurance, hospitals, research charities, and drug and device organizations. Rosenthal also indicates how hospitals have shifted their focus from caring for patients to focusing on profits. According to her, rather than caring for the vulnerable and sick Americans, the medical system has been overrun by companies seeking to exploit for profit the trust that these people place in their healthcare.
Rosenthal posits that hospitals are now increasingly being managed by business executives, and as a result, they now act like predatory lenders hounding patients and taking away their homes. Rosenthal could not have highlighted the fact about our medical system any better. I do agree that our healthcare system is rotten to the core. Americans are suffering and dying from medical conditions that are easily treatable reason being that they are denied care since they cannot not afford the exorbitant bills hospitals charge.
In his book, Barr (2016) focuses on reviewing the present structure of the American healthcare system, illustrating the political and historical contexts in which it was formed and the main policy issues that continue to confront us today. He also explores specific components of the healthcare system, including insurance, particularly Medicaid and Medicare; as such, he explains the development of healthcare maintenance organizations. Provided the significance of healthcare reform, it is disappointing that Barr fails to give this matter more attention. His evaluation plainly underscores that the present US healthcare system is not sustainable. He shows that there are simply excess areas of possible crisis and financial instability for the system to survive without considerable reform.
