Discuss the role of the police in the criminal justice process
The police have a vital role in criminal justice to ensure justice is served to the victims and criminals are appropriately punished. The police are tasked with maintaining order, law enforcement and providing civil services to the citizens. Police departments contribute significantly in operations in the criminal justice system to ensure justice is served to the members of the society.
First, the police are tasked with enforcing laws in the interests of the criminal justice system. In this case, the police investigate crimes and apprehend offenders (Roberg, Kuykendall and Novak, 2002). The police collect evidence to be presented in courts of law thus ensuring that justice is served as per the constitution, by-laws and established policies in the country. Therefore, enforcing laws ensure that law and order are maintained in the society in the interest of criminal justice.
The police are tasked with preventing crime in society. The police are involved in responding to crimes incidences and conducting routine patrols across society (Skinns, 2012). The thought that police are always alert in society prevents people from being involved in criminal acts. The fact that police prevent crime reduces burden in the criminal justice system thus effective and efficient operations.
The police have a role of giving supporting services in their communities to reduce, prevent or manage crime. In this case, the police are actively involved in training members of the community on issues such as community policing and transforming former criminals to law-abiding citizens (Walker and Katz, 2012). Also, supporting activities such as gun buyback programs and guidance and counselling of the youth improve the criminal justice system. The police supporting services are inclined to reducing crime thus improving the criminal justice system.
In conclusion, the police are involved in a wide range of activities directed in assisting efficiency in the criminal justice system. The police roles in improving the operations of the criminal justice system include enforcement of laws, prevention of crime and providing support services. The police role ensures a reduction and prevention of crime in the interest of the criminal justice system.
