Week 12 Discussion
Exercise is defined as structured physical activities conducted with a specific purpose of improving or maintain body health or physical fitness. Several physiological changes can be associated with doing an exercise or physical activity. Some of the physiological changes include cardiovascular responses, respiratory response, and body weight.
The cardiovascular system incorporates blood, blood vessels, and the heart. Participating in physical activities requires the cardiovascular to increase its demand to match that provided by the skeletal muscle, and the oxygen demanded the exercise (CHAPTER 3, n.d). The changes in the cardiovascular system during exercise include increased cardiac output, increased blood flow in the skeletal muscle to up to 80 percent of cardiac output, and increased oxygen extraction. During training, the respiratory system components undergo changes that are essential to the body. For instance, the pulmonary ventilation increases due to stimulation caused by increased production of carbon dioxide, blood and body temperature, and hydrogen ions during the exercise.
The changes in both the cardiovascular and respiratory systems during physical activity enhance the body’s ability to produce oxygen and nutrients. The body also gains the ability to efficiently get rid of carbon dioxide and metabolic waste products (CHAPTER 3, n.d). Other body improvements associated with cardiovascular and respiratory systems include improved body ability to maintain body temperature, acid-base, and transportation of hormones to their target organs from the endocrine. Another physiological change attained through exercise is the control of weight. Participating in physical activity contributes to the burning of calories that enables the body muscle to reduce to a required limit (Mayo Clinic, 2019).
