Lillian Wald: A Pioneering Nurse and Health Advocate

A. Early Life
Lillian Wald was born on March 10, 1867, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the daughter of German-Jewish immigrants who valued education and hard work. Wald graduated from high school at the age of 16 and enrolled at the New York Hospital Training School for Nurses. After graduating in 1891, she worked as a private duty nurse in New York City. Wald was exposed to the squalor and poverty of the city’s tenement district, which inspired her to dedicate her life to improving the health of underserved communities.

B. Platform and Impact on Nursing Profession
Wald’s platform was to bring public health nursing to the urban poor. She believed that the best way to achieve this goal was to provide preventive care, such as health education and disease prevention, rather than just treating illnesses.
